Cairns: Part 5

Posted on 10-February-202510-February-2025 By Kate

Complete with hiking, swimming, and snakes, I was off from Cairns to Fitzroy Island!

Day 5

Today’s excursion was to Fitzroy Island! It was about a 45 minute ferry ride over from the Cairns marina. I came prepared with snacks, my swimmers, and all the sunscreen. My first activity was a hike around the Summit Hike trail. It was HOT. The island’s summit was 269 m up, and had the views to show for it. After the descent, I took my lunch up the “Secret Garden” trail and had my little smorgasbord in the shade. Then it was time to swim! I got suited and suncreened up, made my way to an area that was too reefy to access during the low tide, so I headed out to the other beach. I saw another snake! This was Northern Tree Snake, also a non-venomous specimen.

Hot.

While snorkelling and swimming on Nudey Beach (it was a clothing required beach, don’t worry!), I spotted a Bluespotted ribbon tail ray, and gave it a wide berth because I didn’t want to end up with its venomous tail spines anywhere near me. Swimming at Fitzroy Island meant crocs were a non-issue, as they don’t venture far enough away from the mainland to make it out there.

Fitzroy Island, being off the coast of FNQ, meant we could swim without worrying about crocs

See you soon,
