Q1(ish) 2025 in Review

Posted on 18-April-202518-April-2025 By Kate

Months are getting too hard to count and life is so full that blogging has taken a back seat. Here we are! Since November, I’ve done heaps of new things, finally got to see my baby sister, visited Canada, and started year 2 of teaching! I’m in the home stretch of term 1, and getting ready for a jam packed trip back to WA. Over the summer, there’s been a couple of minor sunburns, but that’s the cost of spending every waking minute outdoors, and I’m happy to pay the price.

The last chunk of my trip involved more boats, SCUBA diving, and some of the best fruit I’ve ever tasted.

Cairns: Part 5

Posted on 10-February-202510-February-2025 By Kate

Complete with hiking, swimming, and snakes, I was off from Cairns to Fitzroy Island!

Day 5

Today’s excursion was to Fitzroy Island! It was about a 45 minute ferry ride over from the Cairns marina. I came prepared with snacks, my swimmers, and all the sunscreen. My first activity was a hike around the Summit Hike trail. It was HOT. The island’s summit was 269 m up, and had the views to show for it. After the descent, I took my lunch up the “Secret Garden” trail and had my little smorgasbord in the shade. Then it was time to swim! I got suited and suncreened up, made my way to an area that was too reefy to access during the low tide, so I headed out to the other beach. I saw another snake! This was Northern Tree Snake, also a non-venomous specimen.

Hot.

While snorkelling and swimming on Nudey Beach (it was a clothing required beach, don’t worry!), I spotted a Bluespotted ribbon tail ray, and gave it a wide berth because I didn’t want to end up with its venomous tail spines anywhere near me. Swimming at Fitzroy Island meant crocs were a non-issue, as they don’t venture far enough away from the mainland to make it out there.

Fitzroy Island, being off the coast of FNQ, meant we could swim without worrying about crocs

Day 4

Today was the second day of our tour, starting off with a quick but filling breakfast at the hostel we stayed at. Then we were off to feed some rock wallabies, and swoon over all the joeys.

2024 Wrapped

You know how a song will bring you back to a specific moment in your life? My 2024 was full of those kinds of moments, and listening to my wrapped is like a time machine to them.

Month 15 Review

Posted on 26-November-202426-November-2024 By Kate

Whaddup, October has come and gone. Halloween is FAR from taking hold down under, making November 1 a regular teaching day (sorry, my Canadian counter parts!). This month felt FULL of activities with my friends, from coming home from our Stuart Highway trip (3600 km in 9 days!) with Sydney, to finishing up term 2 courses and celebrating Canadian Thanksgiving with all the Canucks down under.

Cairns: Part 1

Next trip! I spent a week in Cairns (pronounced like “cans”), which ended up being my celebratory excursion after receiving the amazing news that my school was going to sponsor my visa for my stay to be extended in Australia. Now, the trip was booked prior, but I found out a couple days before my good news, so I was riding that high the whole time.

Perth: Part 2

Posted on 21-October-2024 By Kate

After a busy first couple of days, the second half of our trip was marginally more relaxed! We toured Fremantle Prison, then explored Fremantle, South Perth, then slowly making our way back home to Victoria.
