Posted on 10-March-202421-April-2024 By Kate

It’s officially Autumn in Australia, which means that February has come and gone and we are one month deeper into my big adventure!

Month 6 Review

Posted on 18-February-20246-March-2024 By Kate

The halfway point of my time in Australia has come and gone (or has it??) and I’m still loving it. I honest to goodness don’t know where the time is going. I am head over heels for Australia, and soaking up every second. Month 6 was a busy one, with summer break in full swing, a visit from Mom and Dad, and a trip to Sydney!

Month 5 review

Posted on 11-January-202411-January-2024 By Kate

Happy new year! Five months in now, and I’m continuing to try and learn new things: more driving, a trip to Tasmania, and accepting a position for the new school year teaching foods.

Month 4 review

Posted on 10-December-202331-December-2023 By Kate

November has come and gone in the blink of an eye! It was a less busy month for work, between Melbourne Cup day and my trip to the Whitsundays I was basically working part-time, with only two full weeks of work over the course of the month.

Month 3 review

Posted on 6-November-202331-December-2023 By Kate

Three months down! October in Melbourne means spring is in full swing. I am compulsively checking the weather before I leave the door in the morning, and unless it’s going to be 100% sunny, my rain coat is coming in my bag. This methodology has only (almost) failed me once – there was a surprise thunderstorm at lunch time. Luckily, I wasn’t slotted for duty that day!

Month 2 review

Somehow, it’s been two months in Australia! Many more new things this month, but as I was writing this, I was listening to The Anthropocene Reviewed by John Green and he shared a quote that I think summarizes September well:

Don’t just do something, stand there.

Month 1: Settling in

Posted on 3-September-20235-October-2023 By Kate

I’ve been in the Southern Hemisphere for a month already?! It really doesn’t feel like it. Here’s my first month, by the numbers:

Ride the train with me

Posted on 15-August-20235-October-2023 By Kate

Melbourne’s public transit network blows Winnipeg’s out of the water. There are three modes of transit: trains, trams, and buses. The train’s novelty has yet to fade. It took me a couple trips, but I like to think I’ve got the hang of it now!

The roommate search

Posted on 9-August-20235-October-2023 By Kate

I’m glad to say I’ve found a place to call home! The search was intense and draining. Between choosing a suburb, finding a person who was responsive on flatmates.com.au, coordinating a time to meet, then assessing the meeting after (because I can’t not overthink), it’s such a relief to know I’ve got my long-term accommodations lined up.

My first three days

Posted on 31-July-20235-October-2023 By Kate

It’s been a busy few days! My jet lag is almost resolved, although it’s pushing me to go to bed early (is 7 pm too early?), and I’ve been getting settled in, tackling lots of administrative stuff, and having just a little bit of fun starting to explore. Here’s a recap of my first few days:
