The last chunk of my trip involved more boats, SCUBA diving, and some of the best fruit I’ve ever tasted.

Cairns: Part 5
Complete with hiking, swimming, and snakes, I was off from Cairns to Fitzroy Island!
Day 5
Today’s excursion was to Fitzroy Island! It was about a 45 minute ferry ride over from the Cairns marina. I came prepared with snacks, my swimmers, and all the sunscreen. My first activity was a hike around the Summit Hike trail. It was HOT. The island’s summit was 269 m up, and had the views to show for it. After the descent, I took my lunch up the “Secret Garden” trail and had my little smorgasbord in the shade. Then it was time to swim! I got suited and suncreened up, made my way to an area that was too reefy to access during the low tide, so I headed out to the other beach. I saw another snake! This was Northern Tree Snake, also a non-venomous specimen.

While snorkelling and swimming on Nudey Beach (it was a clothing required beach, don’t worry!), I spotted a Bluespotted ribbon tail ray, and gave it a wide berth because I didn’t want to end up with its venomous tail spines anywhere near me. Swimming at Fitzroy Island meant crocs were a non-issue, as they don’t venture far enough away from the mainland to make it out there.

See you soon,
Kate
Cairns: Part 4
Day 4
Today was the second day of our tour, starting off with a quick but filling breakfast at the hostel we stayed at. Then we were off to feed some rock wallabies, and swoon over all the joeys.

Man I love FNQ. Day 3 had a GORGEOUS sunrise, then starting my Uncle Brian’s tour headed out towards the Atherton tablelands region.

And we’re back exploring the tablelands region of tropical Queensland!

Next trip! I spent a week in Cairns (pronounced like “cans”), which ended up being my celebratory excursion after receiving the amazing news that my school was going to sponsor my visa for my stay to be extended in Australia. Now, the trip was booked prior, but I found out a couple days before my good news, so I was riding that high the whole time.

After a busy first couple of days, the second half of our trip was marginally more relaxed! We toured Fremantle Prison, then explored Fremantle, South Perth, then slowly making our way back home to Victoria.

The next escape after I got home from my East Coast trip was a quick long weekend out in Western Australia with Sydney. We took off straight from school the Wednesday before ANZAC Day (more or less Australia’s major Remembrance Day), had the Thursday as the public holiday, then had the Friday booked off.
(more…)East Coast: Odds and ends (and reposts)
In the process of migrating my website, I seem to have lost my last month or so of posts, so I’ll include the drafted version of my east coast trip following from Broken Hill to Sydney, Sunshine Coast, K’gari, Noosa, Brisbane, and Byron Bay. Technical difficulties seem too common, but no problem – let’s get on with wrapping this trip up!
